Video: Gingando (My New Brazilian Choro)

December 21, 2017 Rebecca Hass
GINGANDO-NEW-CHORO-Rebecca-Hass-piano.png

If you need some music to pep you up in the midst of your frazzled holiday preparations, I have just the thing! Here's a video of Gingando, my newest Brazilian choro that I have been lucky enough to perform 5 times in the last 5 weeks! None of those were (video) recorded, so I had to make a little video on my phone.

If you're wondering, "What's a choro?", there are different types - much of it has a very fast tempo like this one, but there are also slower ones (AKA choro serenata) like my other choro Anelante. For a little more background on Brazilian choro, check out this Pop Matters article, which references an amazing documentary called The Sound of Rio: Brasileirinho (highly recommended!), and this WNYC feature on Choro Ensemble with Anat Cohen.

You can watch Gingando below:

As the year is winding down, I'm also winding down my 2nd 100 Day Project of 2017 (today is Day 90, which I kind of can't believe!) - you can follow along on my Instagram here: 100 Days of Writing Music) and many of the pieces are also recorded on my SoundCloud page. It has been an amazing tool for forming a habit, and further proof that small actions add up to big things. I'll share some more thoughts in my next post the first week of January, when I recap 2017 and share my goals for 2018.

I'm wishing you all a restful holiday season (take some time for yourself!), and an inspiring start to 2018!

{TUESDAY TIP: Don't overthink it}⠀
Today, like yesterday, is a super busy day that pulls me in many different directions. I've actually been able to get things done more easily than I expected (like designing this draft of the enamel pin for my Kickstarter), because I stopped overthinking and started doing. And, (surprise!) I didn't force it to be difficult, so it stopped being difficult! ⠀
🙌🙌🙌⠀
I've been really inspired by @heykatielee 's project #iamwhatittakes this month (check out her IG Stories for details), in which she asks how things would change if we believed that we are what it takes, and that we already have everything we need to accomplish the work we really want to be doing. (It's true!) Anything you need to figure out will be figured out in the process, so just start! ⠀

{MONDAY MOTIVATION}⠀
I took my first 8am walk in months today, and it was AMAZING. For me, walking is not only exercise, but a way for me to untangle my brain, focus on mantras, and/or set intentions for the day (which is much nicer to do first thing in the morning than midday). Today holds 3.5 hours of rehearsal, 2.5 hours of teaching, and starting on a long list of things I need to accomplish this week, so being present on my walk was a fabulous way to start the day. ⠀
👟👟👟⠀
What are your goals for the week? Mine are too numerous to list here, but goal #1 is staying present and listening to what I need to take care of myself. Let me know in the comments and I'll cheer you on!
{SUNDAY SHOUT-OUT: awesome people doing awesome things}⠀
Today's shout-out is to my friend and neighbor Liz Lang (@lizlangart), whose paintings and peaceful words I always find uplifting and inspiring. I love how she uses grids and repeating lines, which are geometric yet organic (like her work that features plants!), with great combinations of colors. ⠀
🎨🎨🎨⠀
Liz, along with lots of other folks here at Carleton Artist Lofts, will be showing work next weekend April 27-29 at the St. Paul Spring Art Crawl. There will also be tons of great music and events throughout the weekend - come and check it out! ⠀
🎨🎨🎨⠀
I'm doing these shout-outs weekly, because when someone is doing awesome work, you should tell them. You should do that, too - pass it on!⠀

Here are a couple of the surfaces I have been working on these last two weeks. I hadn't intended to add such a vibrant green to the piece on the left, but these cold winter days have me dreaming of warm sunshine and abundant life. And I also wanted to remind you all that you are LOVED beyond measure and here for a reason. ⠀
May All Beings be Happy and Free.⠀

{NEW BLOG POST}
I had an awesome time at the @mnmusicco Summit last weekend - it was great to learn, be inspired, and meet interesting people, which is totally in line with my word for 2018 - CONNECT. I wrote about how the word is impacting me so far this year, and recapped all of the sessions that I went to. If you're in Minnesota, I highly recommend attending next year's summit! {link in profile}

{TUESDAY TIP: Seek out what seems fun}⠀
This might sound really silly, but oftentimes we skip over what seems fun for what we feel we "should" do, which, after a while, really kills the creative spark. Over the last several months, I’ve started reading more YA fiction and graphic novels, because I hate it when I get into spells of reading for education that start to feel like drudgery (even though I’m interested in the topic!) ⠀
📚📚📚⠀
This and a recommendation from my Creative Musician club Facebook group has led me to start reading Lynda Barry’s Syllabus: Notes From An Accidental Professor, a graphic novel depiction of her assignments for her creative drawing/writing class, which is so fun and thought-provoking, and I wish that I could be her student! It's such an inspiring read that I'm going to have to write a whole blog post about it, but so far, the ideas about approaching being a beginner are amazing, as are her philosophical questions. More to come! ⠀
