Brazilian Music Friday Feature #4

This week's pick is Samba de Orly by Chico Buarque, one of the great songwriters of Brazil. Though not as well-known in America as his contemporaries Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque also spoke out against the Brazilian military government in the 1960s and wrote many songs in protest, as this was one of the only ways to speak out safely at the time. This song was written during his exile in Rome.

It's been on my mind because I've been playing it a lot and starting to arrange it for solo piano for a faculty recital at MacPhail Center for Music in February. Chico Buarque has a huge catalog of music, so if you like it, don't stop here!

Enjoy the song, and your weekend!
